Respect Your Elders!

September 6, 2016

I got a lot of positive feedback today from last night's post via email. People all seemed to be wonder who i was writing about, mostly looking for what gossip they could grasp. Yesterday's post was a generalization of what i see almost daily now in the fitness/strength world unfortunately. I had one reader email me last night telling me how his mom went to a big chain gym after coming from an ortho doc. She had neck troubles and they recommended some strength training. His mom goes to a "personal trainer" only to have him first have her do back squats? Really?!?! Everyone seems to have a story similar to this now days unfortunately.

Tonight's topic: Respect Your Elders

Mainly I will talk about strongman in this blog, but this topic can relate to almost any subject. I know i sound old even talking about this topic, but i see it more and more each day. There are a few, i repeat a FEW, current strongman in their early 20's have had a lot of success lately and if you check their background of how they became successful, you'll find a great support system behind them.

Then you have your other batch of early 20 something year old kids who think they have it all figured out. For example, they see an older gentleman, limping by the squat rack and make fun of how he walks. If they just took 5 mins out of their day to talk to that person instead of poking fun at them, they might actually learn something. That guy with the limp, that is hobbling around the gym, he might have squatted over 1,000lbs one day or could even be a war veteran, there has to be a reason. My point tonight is this. There is always someone who knows more than you. Go out and seek knowledge! Same thing happens with people promoting strongman contests. You have new promoters put on 2 or 3 contests and think they have it all figured out. I have promoted over 50 strongman contests and i still seek out better ways of making my shows better.  I'll be the first to tell you i don't know everything when it comes to strongman...but i'm learning all the time.

My advice for you guys just starting out in strongman. Find a strongman crew with a few masters in the group. Pick their brains and find out most importantly how they have survived in this sport for this much time! Just listen to what they have to say, they will be more than happy to share their experiences with you! The amount of knowledge you can acquire is enough to last a lifetime!

This weekend I'll travel to Elkton, MD for Fallfest 2, which is shaping up to be a great contest!
